NUKU'ALOFA (Radio NZ International/Pacific Media Watch): Lawyers for &#xD;
people who gave testimony at the commission of inquiry into the sinking &#xD;
of the Tongan inter-island ferry Princess Ashika have urged the &#xD;
commissioners to be cautious in the way they compile their report.&#xD;
&#xD;
The vessel sank in August last year claiming 74 lives.&#xD;
&#xD;
The inquiry, which began in late October, is close to being completed, &#xD;
with the lawyers’ submissions last Friday and the final report due to &#xD;
be presented at the end of this month.

&lt;br/&gt;Abstract: Twenty nine of the delegates at an East Asia media conference on conflict reporting in jakarta, Indonesia, on March 9-11 signed a strong open letter to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines in the wake of the Mindanao massacre on November 23, 2009, when 32 journalists were among 57 people killed by a local politician’s militia.&#xD;
&#xD;
"Their murder, and the death of countless other media workers in your country in recent years, will not be forgotten by us," the letter said. "We urge you, your government and the institutions of state to take the appropriate actionto ensure justice is done and to create a better, safer environment for journalists in your country."

SUVA (Fiji government/Pacific Media Watch): Due to the onset of Tropical Cyclone Tomas, the Permanent Secretary for Information and Government spokesperson, Lt Col Neumi Leweni, advises that the public consultations on the Media Decree expected to commence Wednesday, 17 March 2010, have been deferred until further notice.&#xD;
Once reactivated, the consultations are expected to be held in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa.&#xD;

SUVA (The Fiji Times/Pacific Media Watch): The Fiji government is &#xD;
calling for public submissions on the Media Decree which will be &#xD;
released this week.&#xD;
&#xD;
Consultations will be held at the Police Academy in Nasova on &#xD;
Wednesday, at Commissioner Western's office in Lautoka on Friday and &#xD;
Labasa Civic Centre next Wednesday.&#xD;
&#xD;
The Ministry of Information has urged members of the public who are &#xD;
interested in taking part to start sending their submissions to the &#xD;
ministry from tomorrow.
