Abstract: "In this context [currently in Fiji], I [John Samy] submit to you that in order for Fiji to be able now to move forward, to attain sustainable stability, peace and progress, there is a compelling need for us all to look back: to learn from the experiences of the past. • In making this case for looking back, I readily admit that I am not a historian. My concerns relate to policy, development, governance, and leadership; in particular on how those we view as our leaders in public life, actually exercise their responsibility and accountability as leaders. • In dealing with a situation such as that of Fiji, the least we should expect is that our leaders (within Fiji and elsewhere, including in particular in our governments in New Zealand and Australia) act in wisdom based on good advice; that they exercise judgement drawing upon past experience; that they are able to objectively assess and appreciate the country-context realities on the ground; that they demonstrate basic good common sense; and that they pay heed to the facts, ie the information that’s readily available."
